Treatment

As with most health problems, the treatment for hepatitis depends on the type of hepatitis it is and the extent to which it has physically affected the body.

Not all people infected with hepatitis C, for example, require or respond to treatment. There are, of course, cases of hepatitis C in which liver surgery or treatment with medications, interferon for instance, become necessary.

With hepatitis B, treatment will depend on whether the case is acute or chronic; that is, whether it is short-term or long-term. Treatments for hepatitis B may include monitoring by doctors. Hepatitis medications may be used to either hinder the spread of the virus in the body (lamivudine) or to improve the body's immune response to the virus (interferon-alpha).

Outside of medication and medical treatment, some people with hepatitis B will need to follow special dietary requirements. Some people may also need emotional support to deal with their diagnosis. It is important to talk to a health care provider if feelings of shame or fear become overwhelming.
